Flash 10 Breaks WordPress Flash Uploader

The current major release of Adobe’s Flash software, Flash 10 has some extra security settings that are breaking the Internet. Sort of.

Any user that has Flash 10 installed and uses WordPress or Flickr to upload media will experience issues with using the Flash Uploaders. In Wordpress when uploading media a user will click the “Choose Files to Upload” button, but won’t see any response. This has been a known issue with WordPress 2.5 and 2.6 (current) since August and will most likely see a fix in the next point release of the blogging software.

If you don’t actively use a Wordpress Blog or Flickr you can stop reading here.

The problem stems from an issue in SWFUpload where Javascript will indirectly call the File Dialog box to open. Adobe sees this as a security vulnerability and has prevented File Dialog Boxes from being called programmatically in their latest Flash 10 release (instead File Dialog boxes should only called via a flash file). According to sources, Adobe has said that they wont be reverting the change but they will be working with major projects like Flickr and WordPress to come up with a solution.

What is the difference between Flash 9 and Flash 10?
Among other improvements in Flash 10, it has highly improved video performance. Flash 9 actually works with the flash uploader in WordPress and Flickr.

The Solution:
Users on Windows could consider the following install options:

Install Flash 9 in Internet Explorer via the ActiveX Object installer.

Install Flash 10 in all other browsers using the Flash Install Executable available from the Adobe Website.
